Course Description

  • Music Listening and Enjoyment is an opportunity to discover the wonders of great music on a journey from the 20th century back to the Renaissance; it is not a watered-down history class for the non-music major.
  • Beginning with the Beatles and going back past Bach, this course is all about listening, and how the abillity to be receptive can result in a transforming experience.
  • Students are expected to be present, not only in body, but also in mind and spirit. The willingness to engage in the challenge of active listening is key to successfully enjoying this class, for only in this way can we experience the deep joy and understanding that great music can so powerfully impart.
  • The intent of Music Listening and Enjoyment is to enable each student to experience music from the inside out, much as musicians do—not to merely peer in from the outside. Elements of sound, as they weave their way through the canvas of time, are examined and valued for their ability to create passion and pathos—magic and delight.

"The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new landscapes, but in having new eyes." ~ Marcel Proust

Grading Information

The average of four quizzes equals half of the final grade.
The average of two essays, a mid-term and a final, equals the other half of the final grade.

I do not factor in attendance. Experience has shown that a student's grade usually mirrors his/her attendance.
