The 12-Step Session

Step 4: Identify Thought
Processes
Contrary to what Students and Tutors sometimes mistakenly believe, the goals of tutoring
are not
only discussing homework problems or correcting errors in Students' work. Identifying the
thought processes used in learning tasks also is a fundamental aspect of tutoring.
Helping Students understand the processes that are used to accomplish the task fosters student
independence.
- Tutor:
- Great. You worked that
problem. Before we look at the right
answer, though, explain to me your thought processes in working it out.
Tutors should consult the text or lecture notes as sources of information to reinforce that
Students can find concepts from learning materials and not only the Tutor.
- Tutor:
- That sounds right to me, but we
ought to check the text to be sure.
